Our Residents Shine at Medical School Retreat
Posted on October 14th, 2009 No commentsOver Labor Day Weekend, the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care sponsored an airway workshop for the first and second year UCI medical students at their annual retreat in Palm Springs. Our Chief Resident, Dan Schweissinger, Darren Raphael (CA-2), James Nguyen (CA-1) and Dr. Flores (Director of Medical Students for our department) provided video instruction and “hands on” in routine intubation, glidescope and fiberoptic intubation.

Question about the Match
Posted on October 14th, 2009 No commentsI am currently going through the match in anesthesiology. How many programs should I plan on selecting? R.T.
That’s an excellent question! The data from last year’s Anesthesiology match revealed that the probablility of matching for U.S. Seniors approached 1.00 when 10 or more programs were ranked. From the number and quality of applications we are seeing this year for our own program, I predict that there will be alot of competition for the existing residency positions across the country. I am advising our medical students to apply to enough programs to provide them with at least 12-15 sites to visit and to rank no less than 10. Hope that helps. CTA

Question about fellowship
Posted on October 1st, 2009 No commentsMy name is M. N. As an anesthesiologist with eight years experience in different parts of this field, I am interested in an opportunity to further expand my knowledge with a fellowship program.
Thank you for your interest in our program. We currently offer an ACGME accredited Pain Fellowship. Applications are accepted from May 1 through September 1 the year before. Applications for the next cycle can be made through aamc.org\students\erasfellow\start.htm CTA

Do you offer PGY-1 positions?
Posted on August 6th, 2009 No commentsAnswer:
We recently underwent a very successful site visit from the RRC, a result of which was a 5 year accreditation cycle. The RRC also granted us status as a four year training program. This coming match cycle we will be offering a clinical base year for our applicants. Applicants will rotate through:
5 months medicine; 1 month general surgery; 2 months critical care (including SICU); 1 month emergency medicine and 1 month high risk OB; 1 month pediatric critical care; 1 month anesthesiology and 1 month pain management.
